![]() ![]() There are five all told and they each have a different array of powers, beyond their enormous health and damage. Once you get to the third research tree, the first of the elementals becomes available. But you can’t fault Amplitude’s design team, who’ve put a fresh spin on each of them-Fotios, the Flame Guardian, for example, is a one-armed stone titan leaking a lash of flame from his missing left arm. Giant elementals aren’t exactly in line with Amplitude’s usual innovative design-they’ve cropped up in games regularly from WoW’s Ragnaros to Demigod’s Rook-and their place in the Endless mythos seems questionable. I haven't tried the sequel yet, and I've never played Endless Legend, so take that for what you will. The titular Guardians themselves are like Total War: Shogun II’s late game ironclads-huge, tough units that can take out entire armies by themselves. ![]() In the end, I didn't feel like the story elements did enough for me, and the combat was so flat that I didn't feel like I was doing much for most of my games. But that could've been because I didn't play as every race, they have oddballs like the Cravers who play very differently from the others. The four-pronged tech tree also didn't seem to offer very much variance from game to game, the same techs wound up being valuable. But it never worked very well in the end (long kinetics always seemed best), and the AI was nearly worthless at building ships well. The game seemed to have two rock/paper/scissors interactions going on at once: long/med/short range and lasers/missiles/kinetics and their countermeasures. The combat sucks, the card battling mechanic felt essentially random, and it felt tough to get a handle on why you were winning/losing combats and what you needed to research to get a technological edge. I ended up only playing three or four games of ES1 before uninstalling it. ![]() That and the idea of terraforming systems to improve their habitability. I love scifi, and the planet UI is what originally drew my interest. So I'm a big Civ V and VI junkie, and I picked up Endless Space 1 on a sale a long time ago after the original release of Civ Beyond Earth was very disappointing. ![]()
